STATEMENT

Hand-patterned cloth. Works consist of fabric by the yard, scarves, wraps, and other unique garments.

The intricacy of nature’s patterns is all around us. There are a thousand tiny seedpods in a parking lot, invisible until you look for them. Their safety is in their smallness. I am inspired by the delicacy of pattern in nature. I seek to investigate these intricacies – the iridescence of a feather, the stripes of a spider’s legs – and magnify them like cells under a microscope. I hope to capture their essence not only on a molecular level, but on a universal level as well. I am attracted to things that are a little bit scary, but beautiful, vulnerable, things that have no voice, just a breath. I am torn between protecting them and illuminating them. I feel a piece is successful when it has this same sense of breath.

As in dreams, the meaning in my work tends to lie below the surface. I am aware of the significance, yet I cannot often grasp it on a conscious level. As time is taken to reflect on these perceptions, more insight comes up to the surface.

A note about the process:
Silk fabric is stretched and pinned on a padded table. The resist is then prepared and applied to the fabric. As it dries, cracks form, and thickened dye is painted over the surface. The texture fluctuates with the changing thicknesses of resist and dye paste. Patterns vary from tiny leaf-like veins to larger softer bubbles. After the dyes are set, the resist is washed away leaving the permanent pattern that you see.
